How to read the Song of Songs
The Song of Songs is Hebrew love poetry celebrating attraction, desire, commitment, and the goodness of marital love. Song 1:1 associates the book with Solomon, but interpreters differ concerning authorship, the identity of the principal man, and whether the poems form one continuous chronological narrative.
This study therefore refers primarily to “the woman” and “her beloved” and avoids treating every scene as a documented stage of one marriage. The Song’s primary subject is human love.
Within the Bible’s broader teaching, marriage also points beyond itself to Christ’s covenant love for His church (Ephesians 5:25–32), but individual poetic details should not automatically be allegorized.
